Walking enemies 02 - Fin'N'Bones
They came from everywhere, the ground and the sea alike, but Sir Blastalot did not falter.
Wow I had this draft for so long and it looks like it will be the last post of 2024 ! Time flies O_O
I will adress the making of monsters C anf F according to their definition in the enemy planning. I choose those ones as they are simpler. They just have a walk animation indeed so I prefer to write about them first.
Besides, at the time I'm writing this article, the pixel art work for enemy D (the big one) is not done yet.
The aquatic dweller
This one was actually supposed to be some kind of zombie, as I took the zombie from Reemax's Zombie and Skeleton as base work.
Here again, the original sprite was too big in height to fit into a 64x64 frame, so I had to adjust it before working the color.
This one has been my biggest rework so far. As i applied the colors, I simplified a little some of the volumes and use the hair strands on the head to create a bumpy head. The little part dingling on the forehead made me thought of a monkfish. Moreover, the big opaque eyes kinda remind me Abe from Hellboy, so this monster came from a zombie, but evolve into an aquatic creature.
Which is nice by the way, as we already have plenty of undead, so one aquatic dweller wil add some diversity to the monsters cast.
I made a first version with arms, but as I settled with the aquatic origin, I remade the spritesheet with tentacles like limb instead of said arms.
Once I finished the version with arms, some time passed and when I reopen the files for the article, I thought that the arms and the clenched fist made it too human, and I tried with the tentacle. Then it made sense as it is an aquatic creature, I think it gives mre persoonality to it.
Morality:
Sometimes, it is worth to wait a little bit before finishing a work. That is true if one indeed has the time to wait, though.
Then I finally gave it a name: Zibsesh! It kinda sounds like the sound it would make while gushing out of the water.
The Skeleton
Well, there can't be a medieval fantasy universe without some skeletons roaming around, arisen by some malevolent necromancer.
This one was really straightforward as I just took AntumDeluge's Skeleton Rework and made some color palette changes.
The only tricky part was to rearrange the mosnters on the sprite sheet due to the number of frames in the animation, so I swapped it with the Goo Monster which only has 4 frames
I triied diverse color combinations and for a while I settled with the red color. However, as I have a lot of reddish monsters (and also due to the color palette limitations) I did a more audacious color scheme mixing some purple and yellow. It gives a kinf of trippy vibe to it, but I ended up liking it as it is a bit more original that you typical skeleton:
Do you appreciate my endeavor? Consider supporting me n Ko-fi! All funds will be reinvested in further game development =)
